7 Keys for the New Christian
- Pray daily – Prayer is your communication with God. I Thessalonians 5:17 says that we should pray without ceasing. This means that you should live a life of continual prayer. It is your communication with the Father that will help you grow and give you peace, strength and encouragement as you face life.
- Study your Bible – II Timothy 2:15 says that we are to study to show ourselves approved unto God so that we might rightly divide His Word. The Bible is God’s Word. Not only will it give you direction, but in it you will discover who God is. He will become increasingly real to you as you commit yourself to study His Word.
- The Holy Spirit – Romans 8:14 says for as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. The Holy Spirit is your daily companion to lead and guide you into the life that God would have to you to live. He is a teacher, a comforter, a guide and a friend. He will lead you in the way you should go. Pay close attention to where the Spirit leads you. Be sensitive to His voice when He speaks to you. He is the key to growing in prayer and Bible study.
- Friends – Choose your friends carefully. Everyone is not going to be excited about your new life. Every relationship you’re involved in may not be supportive of your new lifestyle. If there are people in your life who are not helping with your spiritual growth, you may need to minimize your contact with them. There may be some you need to cut-off completely. Proverbs 12:26 says that a righteous man should choose his friends carefully. Be careful who you give access into your life!
- Be patient – The New Birth happens in an instant, growing up spiritually is a gradual process. Be patient, everything will not change overnight. You will make some mistakes, I John 1:9 says to confess your sins and He will forgive you. Learn to forgive yourself. Do not get stuck because you made a mistake or fell short. Dust yourself off go on. The race is not given to the swift, but to those that endure to the end.
- Start serving – Pray and ask the Lord what would He have you to do. Begin serving in your local church. This will start you on the path of working for the Lord. It will also give you opportunities to fellowship with other Christians. Be faithful to what the Lord tells you to do in the ministry. The rewards far outweigh the time and energy you give in serving Him.
- Show up – What do I mean by show up? Attend church regularly. The Bible says that we are not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together. Find a good Bible teaching church and be faithful. Be faithful to either Sunday school and /or a weekly Bible study class. The biggest mistake a lot of new Christians make is to shake the preachers hand and then disappear. It does you good to stay in consistent fellowship with other Christians.
